About Kuan Yin
Kuan Yin is one of the most beloved and popular Eastern deities. A Chinese goddess, physically and spiritually beautiful, of mercy, compassion, and protection, her name means "she who hears prayers." Kuan Yin, in fact, hears and answers all prayers sent to her.
Kuan Yin is both a goddess and a bodhisattva, meaning "enlightened being." Bodhisattvas can become Buddhas; however, Kuan Yin has such a profound love for humanity that, after attaining enlightenment, instead of ascending to Buddhahood, she chose to remain in human form until each of us becomes enlightened. She dedicates herself to helping us fully open to our spiritual gifts, achieve profound knowledge and enlightenment, and reduce the suffering in the world. It is said that simply uttering her name offers guaranteed protection from harm.
Kuan Yin is often called "the Mother Mary of the East" because she represents the feminine divinity and goddess energy in Buddhism, in the same way that Mother Mary radiates a sweet, loving femininity within Christianity. Kuan Yin teaches us to practice a life of harmlessness, using great care to alleviate suffering in the world and not add anything to it. You may see the color red when she is near, as red flashes of light or a red mist that appears out of nowhere.
