Description
The Rune Tarot is a new version of the runes, in a deck format, composed of 26 cards that are the representation of the runes.
The Runes, from which the Rune Tarot is derived, are a set of characters historically used by Germanic and Nordic peoples, especially in Scandinavia, during the Middle Ages. Runes are a writing system containing a series of symbols, each with a specific meaning and purpose.
At that time, the Runes, represented here by the Rune Tarot, were used to record important events, such as battles and political agreements, but were also used for religious rituals and magic. Rune symbols are believed to have spiritual powers, and so were often used by seers and healers.
Today, the Runes are widely used as a divination tool in modern esoteric and spiritual practices. Rune reading is similar to reading the cards of the Rune Tarot and consists of playing the Runes and interpreting the symbols that appear. Each Rune symbol has a specific meaning, and the combination of symbols can provide a unique and personalized message for those using them.
What are Runes?
Runes are an ancient form of oracle used by those seeking advice. Runes have a long history, dating back to ancient use by Germanic and Nordic tribes, and are still widely used in today’s society.
The word “runa\” simply means mystery, whisper or secret, and is a form of divination or oracle reading system that is used to help gain information about situations or questions. Runes can be made of various materials, but are most often made of stone and crystals and feature a symbol from the runic alphabet.
There are several different types of runic alphabets used in runes, the origin of the Rune Tarot, with one of the oldest being the ancient Germanic runic alphabet known as “Elder Futhark”. The Elder Futhark contains 24 runes, the first six of which spell the word “futhark”. The runes form a set of 24 ancient alphabetic symbols used as divination tools, like an oracle that helps predict the future. It is possibly one of the oldest and most significant oracles in the world.
Over time, this was adapted, and in order to use it for writing in Anglo-Saxon or Old English, several other runes were added to the alphabet, bringing it to 33. This is known as the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc.
Another adaptation is the Futhark Younger, or Scandinavian, which is believed to have been used in Scandinavia until the 17th century. All these variations highlight the changes made as people moved and emigrated to different countries.
Just as each runic symbol is a letter of the alphabet, they also have symbolic meanings. While many of these go back to traditional meanings, such as the Runes Tarot, which would mean a lot to people using the runic alphabet, the intent behind the symbols still has relevance today.
For example, in Elder Futhark:
Fehu, F, means domestic livestock or wealth.
Uruz, U, means a wild ox.
Thurisaz, T, means a thorn or a giant.
Hagalaz, H, means hail.
Ansuz, A, means an ancestral God.
Raidho, R, means wagon or carriage.
Kenaz, K, means a beacon or a torch.
