Description
The Medieval Scapini Tarot is a modern deck by the Italian artist Luigi Scapini, who helped with the artistic reproductions of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot. It features 15th century figures, and is decidedly medieval in tone. Scapini’s artwork has a beautiful vibe; the Major Arcana, in particular, are illustrated in bold colors and set against a gold leaf background that makes them really striking. And the figures depicted in the letters have so much personality that it almost hurts me to look at them.
One thing that makes this tarot truly unique is the design of the Minor Arcana. Luigi Scapini carefully illustrated all the Minor Arcana with vivid scenes. For readers who are interested in entering the world of tarot reading but are afraid of non-illustrated cards, the Scapini Medieval Tarot could provide a nice stepping stone, a sort of transitional step between the Rider-Waite and Marseille traditions.
Throughout the tarot, the costume and posture of the characters is unmistakably medieval. In the Major Arcana, this tone extends to the artistic style, and are reproductions from the late 15th century, commissioned by a Milanese nobleman. In the Minor Arcana, however, the artistic style takes on a decidedly modern twist. Scapini’s images are joyful and inventive. They are peppered with wizards, dragons, and the like, and in many ways feel more like illustrations in a children’s storybook than Tarot cards, as Scapini’s art is refreshing in its lightness.
